CHAPTER 17

INJECTIONS

I met Buck Thursday afternoon in the conference room, as usual. It was the night of the big date, and I hoped that didn’t come up in our conversation.

“I have a driver for my date with Shelly tonight, so you don’t have to worry about me drinking and driving with your nurse in the car.”

“She’s my nurse, not my daughter, Buck. I assume you’ll be responsible. I’m here to talk about recruiting new surgeons. I’m already overwhelmed after only a year. I can’t go through that burnout phase again. I’ll quit altogether.”

“We don’t want that to happen. The board will start working on it.”

“Buck, I’m on the board, and the subject hasn’t been mentioned. You can’t just hire a surgeon and have them here in a week or a month. It takes time.”

“It didn’t with you.”

“I was an exception. But finding an older established surgeon who is willing to move to a small community with an excellent hospital is an ideal way to increase the staff in a short time. I’m serious, Buck. I’m almost at max. I did six procedures yesterday.”

“Great. That’s excellent for our bottom line. By the way, I’m going over to Austin tomorrow to see a dermatologist. He does facial injections for wrinkles. If I’m going to start dating, I need to look better.”

“Why a dermatologist? Why not a plastic surgeon?”

“Those guys want to do surgery. I’ve asked around, and the injections are usually done by a nurse working for a plastic surgeon, or by a dermatologist.”

“I went over to see Robert Warner Friday. He’s the plastic surgeon that worked on Sandy, as well as Phyllis. He didn’t mention anything about injections.”

“I called his office. They don’t do them. They referred me to a dermatologist colleague in Austin.”

“I know nothing about injections. Injections of what?”

“Where have you been, Brady? You’ve got filler, like Juvéderm and Voluma. And paralytics, like Botox.”

“How would I know about injections? Mary Louise hasn’t had those, I’m sure.”

Buck looked at me like I was crazy. “Are you kidding? As good as she looks? That isn’t genetics, son, that’s successful injections. Trust me. Now get out of here. I’ve got to get a haircut and get ready for my date.”

I called Mary Louise on the car phone and told her I was on my way home, and I’d like to ask her some questions about facial injections. I told her that Buck Owens had brought it up and said that he was going to be seen by a dermatologist in Austin, and that I was totally ignorant on the subject. That was met with a short silence, then a “See you soon.”

She met me at the door, gave me a tight hug, then took my hand and led me into the kitchen, where all the lights were on.

“Look at my face. Tell me what you see.”

“I see a beautiful piece of work there, a natural beauty. You have a few laugh lines around your mouth and eyes, and a few worry lines
