CHAPTER 17
INJECTIONS
I met Buck Thursday afternoon in the conference room, as usual. It was the night of the big date, and I hoped that didnât come up in our conversation.
âI have a driver for my date with Shelly tonight, so you donât have to worry about me drinking and driving with your nurse in the car.â
âSheâs my nurse, not my daughter, Buck. I assume youâll be responsible. Iâm here to talk about recruiting new surgeons. Iâm already overwhelmed after only a year. I canât go through that burnout phase again. Iâll quit altogether.â
âWe donât want that to happen. The board will start working on it.â
âBuck, Iâm on the board, and the subject hasnât been mentioned. You canât just hire a surgeon and have them here in a week or a month. It takes time.â
âIt didnât with you.â
âI was an exception. But finding an older established surgeon who is willing to move to a small community with an excellent hospital is an ideal way to increase the staff in a short time. Iâm serious, Buck. Iâm almost at max. I did six procedures yesterday.â
âGreat. Thatâs excellent for our bottom line. By the way, Iâm going over to Austin tomorrow to see a dermatologist. He does facial injections for wrinkles. If Iâm going to start dating, I need to look better.â
âWhy a dermatologist? Why not a plastic surgeon?â
âThose guys want to do surgery. Iâve asked around, and the injections are usually done by a nurse working for a plastic surgeon, or by a dermatologist.â
âI went over to see Robert Warner Friday. Heâs the plastic surgeon that worked on Sandy, as well as Phyllis. He didnât mention anything about injections.â
âI called his office. They donât do them. They referred me to a dermatologist colleague in Austin.â
âI know nothing about injections. Injections of what?â
âWhere have you been, Brady? Youâve got filler, like Juvéderm and Voluma. And paralytics, like Botox.â
âHow would I know about injections? Mary Louise hasnât had those, Iâm sure.â
Buck looked at me like I was crazy. âAre you kidding? As good as she looks? That isnât genetics, son, thatâs successful injections. Trust me. Now get out of here. Iâve got to get a haircut and get ready for my date.â
I called Mary Louise on the car phone and told her I was on my way home, and Iâd like to ask her some questions about facial injections. I told her that Buck Owens had brought it up and said that he was going to be seen by a dermatologist in Austin, and that I was totally ignorant on the subject. That was met with a short silence, then a âSee you soon.â
She met me at the door, gave me a tight hug, then took my hand and led me into the kitchen, where all the lights were on.
âLook at my face. Tell me what you see.â
âI see a beautiful piece of work there, a natural beauty. You have a few laugh lines around your mouth and eyes, and a few worry lines
